BBC NEWS | Programmes | From Our Own Correspondent | America's great faith divide: "There is a reason, I think, why theocracy will never fly in the United States and it has been touched on, inadvertently, by George Bush himself."
I would add that his anecdote about the parents being outraged by a moment of silence is dead-on. Why is silence such a bad thing, even if it really is an attempt by certain religious people to be more publically religious? As I grow older, I feel more and more an affinity with silence, and it really seems to me that the slippery slope truly stops there. Silence is NOT a precursor to an abortion ban. So don't worry about it!
